「装いの力・異性装の日本史」行ってきました (“History of crossdressing in Japan” exihibit)

展示は１章から８章まで分けられていて、地下１階からスタート。ヤマトタケルや歌舞伎などをはじめとして、現代までたどる展示となっています。作品の説明には歴史も書いてあって、歴史をわかった上で見るものは面白かった。日本語はある程度話せるけどやっぱり読むのは時間がかかる。日本史には聞いたことない単語や人の名前があるから苦戦しました。ゆっくり頑張って気がついたら３時間もつぶしていました。

The exhibit was split into sections from 1 to 8 and started on the B1 floor. The exhibit made its way from Yamato Takeru and kabuki to modern times. The description cards included historical context, and seeing those with historical knowledge made the pieces that much more interesting. I can speak a fair amount of Japanese but reading takes time. Japanese history includes words and names I’ve never heard of so I struggled. I slowly struggled and before I knew it, 3 hours had passed.

私が特に印象に残っているのが「DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER」のメンバーがこの展示のためにプロデュースしたインスタレーション。ドラァグクイーンたちのユーモラスな作品名たちと目を離せない衣装たち。ジェンダーを超えた領域で派手に見せつける人たちに感動と共に勇気をもらいました。

What stood out to me was the installation that the members of “DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER” had produced for this exhibit. The humorous titles of the art pieces and the outfits that demanded attention. I was moved and given courage by the people who show up with a flair in a realm beyond gender.
